personalized and unhurried
This is just a starting point. Your unique journey and needs guide our care, so we’re always open to extra visits or discussions if anything comes up. Our goal is to ensure that you feel well-supported and prepared throughout your pregnancy and the exciting journey of bringing your baby into the world.
- slow-paced prenatal visits following the gold standard schedule
(monthly until 28 weeks, bi-monthly from 28-36 weeks, weekly from 36 weeks until birth)
- individualized education and in-depth discussion of your options and wishes
- physical assessment and monitoring of you and your baby at each visit
- nutrition and exercise counseling
- ongoing risk screening to ensure home birth remains a safe plan for you
- both conventional and alternative therapeutic recommendations for discomforts
- in-office lab collection of any needed or recommended tests
- referrals for ultrasounds and any necessary physician consultations
- home visit at 36- 37 weeks to ensure home birth readiness
- access to office recipe sampling and lending library
- birth pool lending service, if water birth is desired
- midwife on-call and available 24/7 for your labor, beginning at 37 weeks
- 2 licensed midwives at your birth to ensure safe & seamless medical care at home
- all medical equipment provided, and emergency preparedness always maintained
- continuous support and monitoring during active labor
- avoidance of unnecessary medical interventions
- eating and drinking encouraged and guided
- freedom to labor how you want, with whom you want, and where you want
- immediate skin-to-skin contact with baby
- cord clamping delayed as long as you wish
- respect for the "golden hour" quiet and calm space for you and your baby
- gentle head-to-toe examination of your baby and optional newborn procedures
- breast/chest feeding support, if desired
We strive to hold space for your birth to safely unfold as it's meant to. We prioritize patience as you labor, but if we determine that labor is not progressing normally, or if there is a concern for safety and/or well-being, we will always share the information with you and together decide on the best plan of action.
After your baby is born, we will stay in your home for a few hours making sure you and your baby are stable, and that your space is cleaned and reset. We'll help get everyone fed and tucked in for a much-deserved rest, then we'll check back in with a phone call, and remain on-call for any concerns. We'll come back to your house on the first or second day for another full evaluation of you and your baby, and to file your birth certificate. We'll also make a plan for an office visit at 2 weeks, and again at 6 weeks.
With how confusing health care costs can be, we strive to offer complete transparency. Our fee includes full midwifery services for prenatal care, birth, and postpartum care. A 10% non-refundable deposit of $800 will be due at the first scheduled prenatal visit and will secure your spot on our calendar. The remainder of the fee must be paid in full by 36 weeks, when we go on-call for your birth. We accept cash, check, and venmo/zelle (with a 3-4% added service charge if a credit card is utilized).
Additional Fees
The following services are not included in our fee, and may be covered by insurance.
- lab processing
- diagnostic ultrasound, such as the recommended fetal anatomy scan at 20 weeks
- prescription medications
- appointments with other healthcare providers as necessary
Insurance
At The Swell: Midwife Services, our practice is intentionally designed to keep our time, attention, and energy focused on providing highly personalized, relationship-centered care throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience.
Because home birth midwifery care is often considered out-of-network, insurance companies frequently require extensive phone calls, repeated documentation, and ongoing claim management that can take many hours away from direct client care. For this reason, we do not communicate directly with insurance companies or participate in insurance billing on behalf of clients. Instead, we collect our fess upfront throughout your prenatal care, and provide you with a referral to a midwifery/home birth billing specialist who can help you pursue reimbursement if you choose.
Healthcare Sharing Plans
We do take HSA/FSA and we are happy to invoice healthcare sharing plans, or to provide a receipt for you to receive reimbursement from your healthcare sharing plan. Our home birth billing specialists are also able to help with these plans.
Payment Plans and Discounts
We provide monthly invoices, and payment plans are available. We offer a 10% discount for military families and first responder families.
